We almost
didn't meet…

Matthias and Bryan, the founders of The Bean Archives

Bryan had just moved to Durham from Copenhagen — two weeks in. Matthias was one Zoom meeting away from skipping Regalia's East Coast tour at Yonder Coffee. Fate stepped in, the connection happened, and a bond over coffee formed fast.

What started as an Instagram archive of coffees we brewed and loved became a shared journey — one we wanted others to explore and discover with us.

That curiosity grew into The Bean Archives subscription. We were craving more variety than we could find — so we did what felt natural and started building it ourselves.

The Triangle Coffee Club helped validate and fuel the idea, with an eagerness to explore new flavors that often led to overflowing freezers, massive group orders, and an endless cycle of resealing smell-proof bags during repacks.

The honest answers

Why we do it the way we do.

Why six

Because comparison is the lesson

Six roasters side by side in a month teaches you more about your own palate than a year of one bag at a time. Breadth is the whole point.

Why 60g

Because it makes funk safe

Sixty grams is three to five brews — enough to know a coffee, small enough that a bag you don't love costs you almost nothing.

Why light

Because that's where origin lives

Light roasting lets the farm, the variety and the process actually speak. It's the register modern specialty coffee is most alive in.

Why a global rotation

Because the best work is everywhere

Twenty-two roaster countries and counting — extraordinary roasters most US buyers never get to taste. We bring them to your door.

Behind the curtain

How a Volume comes together.

Matthias

Sourcing & the global net

Tracks roasters across continents, chases the lots worth chasing, and keeps each month fresh — no roaster or origin on repeat.

Bryan

Tasting & the writeups

Cups every candidate, balances the clean-to-funky spread of the box, and dials in the brew tips you'll find on every card.

Both

The argument

We disagree, taste again, and only ship the six we'd both stand behind. Then we rest them so they arrive ready to brew.
